District 6: Town of La Veta, Cuchara and Vicinity
Represented by Director Don Keairns
P.O Box 1189
La Veta, CO 81005
Donald Keairns and his wife, Mitzi, moved to La Veta in the summer of 1999 to take over the operation of Charlie’s Market from Mitzi’s father, Charlie Masinton. Before becoming a grocer, Don was a computer systems engineer for Lockheed Martin, providing advanced system engineering support to the US Navy Trident Submarine and AEGIS destroyer research and development programs. When Charlie passed away in 2003, Don and Mitzi became full owners and operators of the store. In the spring of 2012, after 13 years, they sold the business to spend more time with family.
Don has served on the San Isabel Board of Directors for 12 years. In the span of his four terms, he has attended training opportunities provided by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) and successfully completed courses to become a certified Credentialed Director and has also achieved his Board Leadership Certificate. Don has served as San Isabel’s representative on the Colorado Rural Electric Association (CREA) Board of Directors and Western United Electric Supply Corporation Board of Directors. He is currently serving as San Isabel Electric’s representative on Tri-State Generation and Transmission Board of Directors. In April 2010, after serving on the La Veta Town Board for two years prior, Don was elected as Mayor of La Veta and served one term.
Don has two stepsons and two daughters. Kai, the eldest, works as a mortgage broker for Morgan Stanley in New York City, and loves to visit La Veta with his wife and five-year old son. Casey lives with his wife in Arizona and just welcomed a son into the world. He currently is a National Accounts Manager/Freight Coordinator for Knight Logistics. Jamie lives in Denver with her husband and is currently enrolled in law school at the University of Colorado at Boulder, scheduled to graduate in the fall of 2014. Ashley currently resides in Arizona and is a third grade elementary school teacher.
Don and his wife are still very active members of the community and support and encourage local businesses, clubs and special events. Don has volunteered at numerous local events such as Oktoberfest, Rotary, the Cuchara Country Music Festival, and for the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts. Don appreciates the good things about small town living, and he is proud to be a dedicated member of the La Veta community. He also greatly appreciates the opportunity to serve as your representative for District 6.
