Attention SIEA Members! Ask Governor Hickenlooper to VETO SB 252

The Proposed Renewable Energy Standard Goes Too Far, Too Fast at Too High of a Cost

SB 13-252 has passed through the Colorado Legislature and is now on its way to the Governor's desk. SIEA is asking the Governor to veto the bill.

This bill greatly increases the existing renewable portfolio standard mandate and will cost rural Colorado billions of dollars to comply. SIEA estimates that electric rates will increase a minimum of 20 percent.

Take action today! San Isabel Electric is asking everyone to contact Governor Hickenlooper to ask that he veto SB 13-252. This can be done with voice mails, emails, letters, etc.

You can respectfully ask the Governor to VETO SB-252. Call his office at 303-866-2471 or send an email comment here (Select SB-252 from drop down menu) at http://www.colorado.gov/govhdir/requests/opinion-leg.html. There will be link to contact the Governor's Office and specific suggestions for language to use in communications to the Governor at http://www.keepelectricityaffordable.org/colorado. Write to the Governor at: Governor John W. Hickenlooper 136 State Capitol Denver, CO 80203-1792

Facts about SB252:

  • Estimated cost on rural electricity consumers $2.5-4 billion.
  • A minimum rate increase of 20 percent, but could go as high as 30 percent.
  • Front Range legislators authored this bill in secret and have fast tracked it through the legislative process to limit public debate.
  • It would force rural Coloradans to purchase an excessive amount of their electric power from expensive renewable sources, even as they strive to meet clean energy standards.
  • Estimates all Colorado taxpayers would have to shoulder an additional $1.2 million annually in increased electric bills for state-owned facilities.
