San Isabel Propane

Renewable Energy - 2nd Quarter

San Isabel Electric Association believes it is in the best interest of its members and the nation to work toward energy independence by using all available resources. One renewable resource in the SIEA service territory is wind. According to the 50 meter Colorado wind map produced by the National Renewable Energy Lab, the areas to the east and south of Walsenburg have shown to have an abundance of wind.

Because wind development requires a very specialized knowledge base, San Isabel Electric Association does not view itself an expert in the field, but rather as a facilitator. San Isabel works with all parties, bridging the gap between area land owners, renewable energy wind developers and power providers to explore viable options available for renewable resources in the San Isabel Electric service area.

In addition to acting as a facilitator for members and wind developers, San Isabel Electric supports wind energy opportunities in other ways. In 2004, SIEA Board of Directors purchased three 30 meter wind monitoring towers with data loggers. The towers are used to collect data, measuring various aspect of wind activity over the course of a year to determine if a site is suitable for future wind development. Additionally, two 50 meter towers were purchased, allowing for a more in depth analysis of the wind data. The installation of a 50 meter tower provides accurate wind data for securing financing for large wind development projects.

Since 1998, San Isabel Electric Association has offered its members the opportunity to support the continued development of renewable energy resources through the Green Power Program.   For a minimal additional monthly charge, members can purchase green power to supply a portion of their electricity use. San Isabel Electric, through a partnership with Tri-State Generation and Transmission, is harnessing the wind and developing other renewable technologies to deliver green power to members—adding to the existing mix of reliable and affordable   electricity produced at hydropower and coal-based facilities.

San Isabel Electric Association firmly believes in assisting members as they explore the wind potential for power generation in the SIEA service area. San Isabel continues to evaluate and utilize new technologies and resources to meet the needs of members.
