Outdoor Electrical Safety Tips

  • Keep ladders, antennas, kites and poles away from the power lines leading to the house.
  • Never use electric power tools or appliances with rain overhead or water underfoot.
  • Don't ever climb power poles or transmission towers. Don't let anyone shoot or throw stones at insulators.
  • Pad-mounted transformers are for underground wiring. The transformers are inside sturdy metal cabinets, which are locked for safety. Never pry them open. If you find an unlocked door, call your local utility.
  • If a power line hits your car, stay inside unless the car catches fire. Then jump clear without touching metal and ground at the same time. Shuffle away keeping both feet on the ground.
  • If you're caught in a lightning storm, get out of the water and stay away from trees. Go indoors and keep clear of windows. Turn off TV and other appliances.

Steer clear of Downed Power Lines

They may not look dangerous, but downed power lines can carry enough electricity to energize the area around them for a great distance.

Downed Power Lines

A fallen line can hurt you, even if it's not sparking. Stay Away! Report the line to 911 or San Isabel Electric Association immediately.

If a downed line touches your vehicle, drive slowly away from the line if you can do so safely. If not, stay inside and wait for rescue workers.

If you must get out because of fire or other danger, jump out without touching the vehicle and the ground at the same time. Land with both feet together and shuffle away with small steps.
