SIEA's Solar Power Position

San Isabel Electric Association, Inc. supports renewable energy as part of a balanced approach in meeting the rising demand for energy by our members. Solar power is gaining popularity with residential consumers, making solar electricity one of the most attention-worthy forms of renewable energy for cooperatives. San Isabel Electric Association supports the research and development of this viable energy.

Because solar development requires a very specialized knowledge base, San Isabel Electric Association does not view itself an expert in the field, but rather as a facilitator of solar projects. San Isabel works with all parties, recognizing that the smaller local projects are more viable for the distribution cooperative level. San Isabel is bridging the gap between members, local businesses and smaller renewable energy solar developers to explore viable options in the San Isabel Electric service area.

While it would not be economically feasible for San Isabel Electric to develop a large scale solar project, it doesn’t mean that SIEA is not able to provide its members with the benefit of solar energy. By the end of 2010 members of San Isabel Electric will receive a portion of their electric power from the renewable energy of the sun. San Isabel’s power provider, Tri-State Generation and Transmission has embarked on developing a 30-megawatt (AC), 500,000-panel solar photovoltaic power plant in northeastern New Mexico.  The “Cimarron I Solar Project” is the largest photovoltaic project by an electric cooperative and among the largest facility of its kind in the world. This project will be located between the towns of Cimarron and Springer, Mew Mexico and will provide solar power to the 44 electric cooperatives served by Tri-State, which San Isabel is a member.   Cimarron I is part of Tri-State’s overall portfolio and will help meet the Colorado and New Mexico members’ Renewable Portfolio Standard requirements.
