Member-owners who have installed licensed electric vehicle(s), battery storage unit(s) approved by San Isabel Electric or electric storage heating equipment (ETS units), can apply for a time-of-day rate by calling San Isabel Electric. There is an additional $10/month access charge, year-round, for member-owners on time-of-day rates.

The time-of-day rate, also known as time-of-use or TOU, is a relatively simple concept: Rates are lower when demand for electricity is low, but costs increase when demand is high.

Member-owners signed up for the electric storage time-of-day rate pay the following during off-peak hours:

  • $0.076 per kWh for the first 1,000 kWh.
  • After the first 1,000 kWh the rate goes down to just $0.062 per kWh.

Residential member-owners who choose to charge their electric vehicles at home, during off-peak hours can pay as little as the equivalent of $0.59 per gallon of gasoline, depending on the amount of electricity used during the billing cycle.

Member-owners choosing to charge their electric vehicle during on-peak hours pay the average equivalent of $1.43 per gallon of gas, still considerably less than the going price per gallon of gasoline.

Electric Vehicles

The electric vehicle charging station at the Pueblo West Library has a Level 2 and Level 3 charger. As an electric cooperative, San Isabel Electric works hard to be a valuable part of the communities we serve. Giving the community and our members the opportunity to experience and learn about electric vehicles – transportation technology of the future – is an example of how we are trying to live up to that commitment.

To compare the total cost of ownership, or find calculators on driving for different types of vehicles, visit the U.S. Department of Energy and look for the Electric Drive Cost Calculator or the Carbon Counter from MIT.

Frequently Asked Questions

Electric and Plug-in hybrid electric cars, once considered a high-tech, expensive novelty, are becoming increasingly common. In fact, several models from mainstream brands have now been sold for years. But many people still have questions about cost, charging, maintenance, and more that they need answers to before they can consider purchasing one as their next vehicle. If you are one of those people, click here to find answers to those questions and help with your decision on whether or not a PHEV or EV car is right for you.

Benefits

Plug-in electric vehicle and electric vehicle ownership has its benefits. Not only are they fun and practical, they also reduce emissions and save you money. Electric motors react more quickly than conventional vehicles and are more responsive. Because charging stations are located in a variety of places such as your home and the local library, you can plug-in and have your vehicle charged up at any time. You may never need to visit a gas station again. EVs can also reduce the emissions that contribute to climate change and smog, improving public health and reducing ecological damage.
