Signs of a failing water heater include:

  • Smell of gas near the water heater; if you notice the smell of gas, immediately shut off the gas supply and call for service/replacement.
  • Water buildup in or around your water heater
  • Water-quality issues, such as rust or sediment visible in your water supply
  • Small plastic pieces in water coming from your faucets
  • No longer providing the same temperature or duration of hot water as it had in the past
  • Broken pilot light
  • Noisy unit or banging in the pipes

Can I install a water heater myself? Attempting to install a water heater without professional plumbing and electrical training can risk your family’s safety and potentially damage your home. It also requires that you transport the water heater, know which additional parts are required, obtain a municipal installation permit, and have the completed installation inspected by your municipality. Depending on where you live, you may not be able to sell your home if you’ve done water heater work without a permit. San Isabel Electric strongly recommends that you use an experienced, licensed plumber to install your new water heater, because they will know the required codes to complete a safe and compliant installation. If you choose one of San Isabel Electric’s background checked and licensed service providers for your water heater installation, they will pull all permits, schedule the municipal inspections for you, and your installation will be backed by San Isabel Electric. How do I know if I need a new water heater or if mine can be repaired? An in-home inspection can help determine whether or not you need to install a new water heater. Often the decision to repair or replace comes down to the age and overall condition of the existing water heater. If the water heater is outside its warranty period or the repairs are extensive, we recommend that it be replaced rather than repaired. If the water heater is within 2 years of its manufacturer warranty period, it can typically be repaired rather than replaced.

Heat pump water heaters

DISADVANTAGES

  • Requires open room with 6’ or higher ceiling
  • Requires condensate drain
  • Reduced savings if in an intentionally heated space
  • Air filter needs periodic rinsing
