Thanks to a $5,500 combined donation from the San Isabel Electric Board of Directors and Basin Electric Cooperative, the Huerfano County Fair Board is giving new life to the doors that have been giving new life to the Huerfano County 4-H Fairgrounds for nearly 50 years. Community Banks of Colorado, The First National Bank in Trinidad, and Spanish Peaks Music Festival have also donated a total of $4,500.
An open door has been a long-time symbol of a new beginning. Thousands in the Huerfano County area have passed through the large sliding doors of the arena, to celebrate I-do’s, new babies, birthdays, retirements, memorials and more.
Hundreds of rabbits, poultry, dogs, hogs, goats, horses, and cattle, from all parts of the county, passed through the doors when the arena was used as an animal evacuation site during the Spring Creek Fire.
For nearly 50 years, community members young and old have come together in the arena to compete against each other, showing off animals they have raised since birth, as well as baked goods, hobbies, gardening projects and more.
“Giving back to the organizations that help keep our communities strong and growing is important to us. The county fair is a place where communities can do just that. It is our pleasure to support this organization that is such an asset to the community.” San Isabel Electric Board of Directors President Jacque Sikes said.
In 2018, the fair board began replacing the wind-damaged large sliding doors on the Huerfano County Fairground’s arena with metal roll-up doors, an expensive feat, for a group of volunteer 4-H and FFA parents.
The San Isabel Electric Board of Directors donated $1,500 in 2020 to the arena door project and $2,500 in 2019 for the replacement of the doors in the hog barn. Power supplier Basin Electric matched SIEA’s 2020 donation with an additional $1,500.
The fair board’s main function is to oversee the Huerfano County 4-H and FFA Fair. The group is also tasked with overseeing the fairgrounds.
The barn, which was built in the early 1970’s, has not had any major renovations.
“Thanks to the generosity of our community, the new arena doors are not only a much-needed addition to the building, they will also help to decrease cleaning costs. The funds saved can then be used to enhance other parts of the fairgrounds as needed.” Fair Board Treasurer, Cynthia Jameson said.
The board is working with Aaron Waters, owner of La Veta business Walters Construction to replace the doors.
The fair board hopes they can obtain the last of the funding needed to finish the door replacement before the 2020 Huerfano County Fair, scheduled for August 5 – 9.
To stay within health department regulations regarding COVID-19 and to continue to keep the community safe, community participation in the 2020 Huerfano County Fair will be limited. Those participating in fair events will also have to follow certain guidelines.
