In a rapidly changing world, Las Animas County aims to keep with tradition as it presents its annual county fair, July 27 – August 1. This year marks the 108th year for this staple community event, but much like other well-known events, this year it will look a little different.
The fair has shown to be a catalyst for community engagement and togetherness, bringing together both rural and suburban youth and people of all ages in the Las Animas County area.

San Isabel Electric and power supplier Basin Electric Power Cooperative made a combined $2,000 donation toward the 2020 Las Animas County Fair.
At a typically county fair you could expect to observe youth showcasing the work they have done with their animals and other projects while also engaging in friendly competition and acquiring leadership skills.
Activities are geared toward youth, their families and anyone interested in learning more about agriculture. These participants often are involved in 4H and FFA groups.
As a fair participant since youth, Fair Board Member, Christine Louden, gives high praise to the fair and its initiatives.
“My parents participated in the fair, as well as myself and my children. The memories of being with friends and just being free to have fun for a few days stands out the most. The trials undergone and triumphed over, with my animals, and record books, have provided life-long lessons of grit and accountability that have served me well as an adult.”
This year participants can expect the fair to be less involved. In order to comply with health department regulations regarding COVID-19 exhibitors and spectators will be limited to specific events as to not exceed capacity for social distancing standards.
Although there will be limited community engagement those who would still like to participate can contribute through donations. Louden explained, “Fair is the result of countless hours of work from various community organizations, as well as volunteers and leader.”
