Wine, cheese and San Isabel Electric are helping fill backpacks with enough school supplies to last the whole year for Greenhorn Valley families who lack the funds.

Ticket sales, auction proceeds and donations from the Valley Backpacks Wine and Cheese Tasting and Silent Auction will go towards furnishing backpacks for preschool, elementary, middle and high school students. The backpacks will be filled with grade-appropriate school supplies to last the entire year as well as vouchers for cold-weather clothing.

San Isabel Electric Board Director Dennis Maroney will present four Valley Backpack board members with a $1,000 check at the event on Sunday, August 5 at the Greenhorn Valley Library in Colorado City. San Isabel Electric’s Board of Directors donated $500. Basin Electric Power Cooperative matched San Isabel’s donation with an additional $500.

“Valley Backpacks provides a great service to the Greenhorn Valley community. The long list of school supplies – calculators, shoes, notebooks, pencils, folders, highlighters, computers – it’s enough to bust a struggling family’s budget. The San Isabel Electric Board hopes that lessening the burden of the school supply bill can improve the quality of life for our Members,” Maroney said.
